Great ride today!

Im really chuffed ALiG was an absolute star today out hacking.
We went out with YO on her gelding, who Ali doesnt like, and Ellie. He was a bit slow to start with so he got a sharp smack with the whip and off he went walking really well and actually led for the whole ride.He def switches off a bit if he goes behind so I thought okay stay infront and he was fab:) We had a canter along the track and up the hill home with him infront all the time and he throughly enjoyed himself..his canter is sooo comfortable. He didnt have a single spook and walked past a skip being delivered with hardly a second look and the cars on the lane arent even worth his time;)
Ive was grinning when I got back and I could tell he knew I was pleased..was a great little horse he's going to be!

Polo didnt get ridden cos there was a bit of a mix up I thought Jo was going to come out with us and ride him so I waited for her to come back from riding her old boy but she had to leave early and it was too late to for me to ride two. She's going to come out tomorrow so hopefully Polo will behave himself,he's usually fine in company.I watched Jo ride he old boy and he's a right nappy/lazy bugger so she should enjoy riding a horse she doesnt have push all the way around.

for that ulcer drug - doesn't say if it's available over the counter though!

For the ulcers, you can use Ranitidine first to see if it makes a difference. At least, that's what Patrice Edwards told me. The US brand name is Zantac but there are plenty of generic tablets around here. She said 6 pills, but I did a math calculation and figured more like 15-20 for a 1200 pound (US) horse.

Patrice said it would take a few days to show a change. However she said with the Ulcergard, the changes show up in as little as 24 hours.

Once you start the Ulcergard and it works, you really need to give the full dose for 30 days (that's why it costs so much) to heal the ulcers. Then the horse needs to be on some kind of maintenance. Either low dose Ulcergard or something like U Guard powder.

AliG is a honey. My little guy, Chance and he would make a cute pair. Same kind of laid back--but gee a hack is really fun!--kind of temperament. Quite a contrast to the Polo/Tucker types. *G*

saw some of the shop's own brand ranitidine yesterday they were pretty cheap, i'l get some to try 1st see if there's any change then go from there.
He's just finished antibiotics so going give him a probiotic first then try the ulcer meds dont want to overload him.
Do the have to be on the maintance long term?

Apparently they do need maintenance long term. Once they have ulcers, they are prone to get them again. The U Gard powder is not too expensive comparatively speaking. It is well worth it if it does the job.
